Hi, DPS2004 here! What you are looking at on this page is our original prototype of Beatblock for the Playdate, developed in 2022. After running into some issues with getting it as polished as we wanted it to be on the Playdate, I ended up stopping development on the Playdate version, and rebooting the project for PC. In the end, this was the right move, as it allows us to do all sorts of things that would not be possible if we were still a Playdate game! But the Playdate version of Beatblock is still an important part of the game's history, and I'm happy to be able to share it with you.

In addition to the levels we had for the prototype, the version downloadable here also contains levels from the current PC demo that have been backported to work with the old code. I have also included the conversion tool I created, which in theory will allow you to play custom levels on this prototype, as long as you are familiar with Playdate development ;)

I hope you enjoy taking a look at what could have been, and happy 1 year demo anniversary from the entire BubbleTabby team!

Some notes:

• While it looks similar, the gameplay experience in this prototype is pretty different from what you can find in our current demo. For example, there is zero hold leniency, no tap notes, and a whooooooole lot of lag. This release is absolutely not representative of the quality of the modern version of Beatblock.
• Some prototype levels have their audio muted, because we do not have permission to redistribute the accompanying songs. Imagine the tunes in your head :D
• This version of the game would have not been possible without the work of AlsPals and TheMediocritist, who very generously gave their time back in 2022 to make this happen in the first place. Huge shoutouts to them!
